SPOKANE, WA, UNITED STATES, August 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — BCA, a managed IT services company in Spokane, has reported significant growth following its 2022 ownership transition to Josh Smith, who estimates the company has nearly tripled in size since acquiring the business.

The growth follows a multi-year effort to formalize internal processes, expand the company’s team and build systems designed to support a larger client base.

Smith acquired BCA in 2022 after working within the company for more than a decade. His priorities following the acquisition included documenting administrative procedures, standardizing business processes and developing a team capable of supporting the company’s continued expansion.

“The objective is to make the business operate, and operate at maximum capacity, and make sure it’s growing,” Smith said.

The ownership transition represented a significant change for both Smith and BCA.

Before the acquisition, many of the company’s administrative procedures relied heavily on institutional knowledge held by longtime owner Gary and other members of the organization. Smith said one of his first challenges as owner was turning that knowledge into repeatable processes that could support the company as it grew.

For a period, Smith and his wife worked extensively to reconstruct, document and standardize many of those systems.

“It was an easy ‘yes’ to take care of BCA, but the transition was scary,” Smith said.

The company eventually established the processes and team structure needed to move forward. Smith now estimates BCA has nearly tripled in size since the 2022 acquisition.

Smith’s path to owning an IT company did not begin in the technology industry.

Around 2011, he was teaching at East Valley Middle School, where he led the STRIVE program for approximately 15 students who had struggled in traditional classroom environments.

Because students entered the program with different academic abilities, Smith began developing individualized web-based learning environments, sometimes referred to at the time as “web quests.” Students could access lectures, assignments and other materials based on their individual learning needs.

The experience introduced Smith to the idea of using technology to adapt systems around the people using them.

He later taught computer science and pursued additional education in technology. Smith holds degrees spanning education, business, mathematics and computer science.

His eventual entry into professional IT came after building a website for an organization where his mother worked as a nurse. The project led to an introduction to Gary, BCA’s longtime owner.

Although Smith was interested in technology, he had limited professional IT experience at the time and offered to join the company at an entry-level wage so he could learn the business.

“I told Gary I would come on basically for free,” Smith recalled. “He started me out at minimum wage, and I jumped into BCA.”

At the time, BCA was operating from Gary’s basement after he had downsized the business while caring for his wife following a serious accident.

Smith gradually assumed greater responsibilities within the company, and discussions about a potential ownership transition began relatively early in his tenure.

More than a decade after he first joined BCA, that transition was completed when Smith acquired the company in 2022.

Smith said his experience in education continues to influence how he approaches business operations and technology.

Rather than viewing technology as an end in itself, he focuses on understanding the underlying business problem and determining how technology, processes and people can work together to address it.

He also emphasizes developing capabilities through practical experience, iteration and continuous improvement.

“To get somewhere, I first have to do it,” Smith said. “And to do it, I have to actually pursue it. I can’t just sit around waiting for somebody to tell me about it.”

That philosophy now influences the way BCA works with clients.

Smith said the company’s objective is to help clients operate effectively rather than simply protect BCA’s position as their technology provider. Depending on the organization, that can include working alongside internal IT employees, other vendors and outside technology partners.

The focus, Smith said, is on creating an IT environment that supports the broader goals of the business.

As BCA continues operating under Smith’s ownership, the company is applying the same process-oriented approach internally by strengthening its procedures, expanding its capabilities and building infrastructure designed to support continued growth.
